Kayla Faria: Final Project Proposal

Children’s Development Clinic develops more than kids’ motor skills I would like to produce an audio slideshow featuring the Children’s Development Clinic, a clinic that serves 75 to 80 children with disabilities in motor development, language, social skills and reading and provides University of Maryland students with an opportunity to gain experiential knowledge in learning how to work with children who have disabilities, while earning credit as part of a kinesiology course. The clinic is conducted in the university’s School of Public Health in cooperation with Prince George’s Community College. Student volunteers can receive academic credit, but enrolling in the class is not necessary to volunteer. The hook might consist of a contrast between the idea of school before 9 a.m. on Saturdays as something college students look forward to. Some of the questions I would explore include the clinic’s origins on the university campus, the university’s relationship with PGCC in relation to the clinic, how many students are involved or sign up for academic credit, what initially draws students to the service experience, what the clinic’s specific activities and initiatives are, what the trainings include and what the children and volunteers gain from the experience (possible anecdotes). I would speak with Dennis Vacante, a kinesiology instructor and the clinic’s coordinator, and clinician volunteers. If I am able to speak with parents and get a sense of what they hope their children will receive from the experience, I may then try to get permission to speak with the children participants. Nevertheless, I would probably try to aim to keep the piece no more than 3 minutes long. Ambient sounds – instructions, interactions and children playing Photos - trainings, active clinic photos
