I like this piece by Lee Cowan because it acknowledges an
issue that the public has not paid much attention to. Until viewing this
package, I did not realize that donations to food banks drop during the
election season. The package also shows that a lot of Americans are reliant on
food banks because of financial issues. This piece reminds me that I want to be
a journalist, so I can give a voice to the voiceless and expose an issue that
people are unaware of.
The
sound bites used in the piece showcase the struggles food bank customers
endure. Nicole Johnnie explains that she is embarrassed to go to the food bank,
but does so any way because she has no other choice. Marsha Sternberg also says
that she has no other option but to go to the food bank because her savings ran
out.
The
b-roll in the package also exposes the troubles of food back customers in a
powerful way. One of the shots at the beginning of the piece shows customers
crowded in a room waiting to be called to receive their food. The camera focuses on the facial expressions of the customers, so the audience can see the distressed looks on their faces.
This
multimedia piece effectively uses audio and video to reveal a problem in
society.
